De La Salle vs. Serra

Tune in at 8 p.m. Friday to watch Bay Area’s main two group fight in Concord

The standoff Friday night between secondary school football monsters De La Salle and Serra was presumably a harder ticket than some other Bay Area game in months.

For those not lucky enough to have a pass to the game in Concord, there’s as yet an extraordinary chance to watch the activity. The 8 p.m. game between the Bay Area’s highest level groups will be broadly broadcast game on ESPNU.

This will be the main gathering between De La Salle (1-0) and Serra (1-0 out of six years. The two mentors Justin Alumbaugh of the Spartans and Patrick Walsh of the Padres are incredible companions and previous headliners at De La Sale.

De La Salle vs. Serra

“Patrick and I really kidded about it,” said Alumbaugh, whose Spartans are 10-0 lifetime against ex-De La Salle star Walsh. “It’s not really great for both of our wellbeing. We pull for him consistently and he pulls for us consistently, aside from this Friday night.”

This will be Serra’s second back to back street game against a heavyweight group.

“I have nobody to fault except for myself,” mentor Patrick Walsh said about the consecutive street games against Folsom and DLS to open the 2022 season. “I take full responsibility for what’s befalling our group.”

ESPN cameras to the side, for an early September matchup, the stakes were at that point going to be tremendous. Consider:

  • De La Salle is No. 1 in the Bay Area News Group rankings; Serra is No. 2.
  • Serra just won its season opener out and about against Folsom, another NorCal heavyweight that finished De La Salle’s season last season.
  • De La Salle needed to play Folsom in the regionals last year since Serra – not DLS – was picked by the California Interscholastic Federation to address NorCal in the Open Division state title game.
